MY SESTINA: The Royal Court Rules (Corrected, ammended, fixed up and clarified!)

15 Nov

The first line of the first stanza ends with;

the first.

The word first is used in my second stanza;

line second.

The third stanza ends in fourth but it is found in;

line third.

Sometimes I use the word sixth; however in the fourth stanza;

line fourth.

I love the word sixth, especial on the fifth line of my stanza;

I wrap up the sixth line of my last stanza with

the sixth.

If I was a cheater at this game I would finish sixth.

But because I am not I will easily come in first.

And by the time I finish I will have imbibed a 5th,

of my whisky stash which I normally refill on the 2nd,

because my social security check is gone by the 4th,

as a result of my betting on a nag in the 3rd.

Now I question myself “Which stanza are you in, the third?”

And my brain pleads with me “please  get to the sixth.”

But I think I will be quite lucky to finish this by July 4th.

Or possibly even the year of Our Lord 2014, January first.

o final de término de Barack Obama, el Segundo.

Oh Lordy where is that bottle of SoCo, that 5th?

Damn, the third stanza  also ended with the”fifth”,

and I am only part way finished; about  a 3rd.

Instead of coming in first I will be lucky to reach 2nd.

They are forcing this forth line to end in the sixth.

How stupid!  The sixth stanza ended in the first.

And now I must start the next stanza with the fourth.

The start of this stanza – – – similar to the end of the 4th.

“Opposing mirrors” – -line 2 of  5th stanza ending in “fifth.”

And quite reflecting; the third line ending in “first.”

Fourth line/fifth stanza quite peculiar; first, second, third.

The fifth line of afore-mentioned stanza ending sixth.

Last but not least; the termination being the second.

Finally the sixth stanza is reached; but wait a second,

previous to ending I wish to put a new idea forth,

should we not be considering “The Code of the Sith?”

It is at this point that I should probably take “the 5th.”

Or – – – refer to myself as the person of the third.

However the sestina rules state thusly: “First,

The envoi of the first part reflects the second prior to the fifth,

The following envoi must be overladen by fourth/thirds,

And the final line of all stanzas and envois; “6ths before 1sts!”

     (Unless it follows “c” except for the case when the two letters follow “c” and have a long “e”  sound or when the two vowels are pronounced long “a”.)

THIS IS A LINK ON HOW TO WRITE A SESTINA (the correct way, Not the nutty way)

    Yeah, but who’s on first?
    (This is brilliant and hysterical all at once.)

    I LOVE your sestina, Wally! It’s got so many things: a meta-commentary on sestinas as a formal device; a commentary on the topics of the day; and buckets and buckets of clever humor.

    Wally, you are SO COOL. Now excuse me while I post links of your fantastic sestina on Facebook and Bluebird Blvd. 🙂

      Why thanks Courtenay. Its just a sestina; not anything as important as a Hostess Twinkey Disaster.

    Well done, Wally!

    Your effort is outstanding! Very clever. This sounds more complicated than the villanelle.

    Thanks Courtenay. I approve of this message.

    […] Wally’s sestina is funny, thoughtful, and smartly self-referential. You can read it here: My Sestina: The Royal Court Rules. […]
